What is a cookie?
A cookie is usually a small text file that a website you visit asks to read or download and store on your computer, tablet, mobile phone, or another electronic device. This technology allows the website to recognise your device and save certain information about your preferences or past activities. Cookies are used in various ways, most commonly to help the website function or to make it work more efficiently. They also provide insights into visitors' behaviour on the site.
There are two types of cookies, persistent cookies and session cookies. A persistent cookie remains on your device until its set expiration date (or until you manually delete cookies from your browser). A session cookie is stored temporarily on your device during your visit to our website and will expire when you close your web browser.
Additionally, cookies can either be “first-party” and “third-party”, which refers to the website or domain that sets the cookie. First-party cookies are placed directly by our website. Our website also uses third-party cookies, which are set by domains other than our own, for features that require insights into activities outside of our domain, such as analysing how you found our website or reaching you on other platforms.
In addition to cookies, we also use technologies like local storage and session storage to store information on your device. These technologies function similarly to cookies but differ in how and where the information is stored, as well as how long it remains.
- Local storage: Local storage saves data locally on your device and remains even after you close your browser. It is often used to store user settings and preferences that should be available across multiple visits, such as language selection or theme settings. This information is not deleted automatically and can only be removed manually by you through clearing your browser’s local data (see information above for each browser).
- Session storage: Session storage works similarly to local storage, but the information is only stored for the duration of your browser session. Once you close the browser, the session storage data is automatically deleted. It is often used to store temporary information needed during your visit, such as keeping track of your location on the website.
Consent to use cookies
Our use of cookies is governed by laws on privacy and electronic communications. These regulations exist both in an EU directive (2002/58/EC) and in Swedish law (2022:482). We also comply with the GDPR (EU/2016/679), which protects your privacy within the EU.
You have the option to consent to our use of cookies categorised by purpose (as explained below). This can easily be done using the cookie management tool (“cookie banner”) on our website. You have the right to later withdraw your consent at any time. Use the ‘Manage Cookies’ function above to update your choice.
There are two exceptions, where consent is neither requested nor required. These apply to cookies that are necessary for communication and the proper functioning of the website, and cookies used to provide a requested online service, such as language preference. These are referred to as ‘necessary cookies’.
What purposes do we use cookies for?
Necessary cookies – always placed
Cookies that are necessary for our website to communicate with your device or to enable a feature you have requested. For example, when you click a link, it opens on your device specifically, or displays the language you selected. Without these cookies, the website or the requested features simply would not work. Therefore, these are not optional and will always active. You can deny our request to use other types of cookies without risking the availability of the website of losing your saved settings.
Analytics cookies to optimise our webpage – if you give us your consent
We use analytics cookies to measure how our webpage is used and how it performs. This helps us improve our website based on visitors’ interactions. The data we collect includes the region you are visiting us from, the type of device, operating system and internet provider you using, the number of visits to our website, specific pages viewed, links clicked, and actions taken.
Marketing cookies to give you more relevant information – if you give us your consent
With your consent, we may use third-party to better target our advertising efforts and provide you with more relevant marketing content. The collected includes how you interact with our website, the links you click, and actions you take. Some third-party services may use their own cookies to track how many people have seen a particular ad or how often it has been displayed. The website and the third parties that sets these cookies have their own cookie policy and privacy policy.
Functional cookies – if you give us your consent
Some cookies are used to enhance the functionality of our website, ensure its security, or improve communication with you. We refer to these as ‘functional cookies’.
Personal data that are collected using cookies
Most cookies are not intended to identify you or your device specifically, but are used in our analysis of how our website is used to help us make better decisions. For example, we collect insights into which sections of our website receive more or less traffic, helping us determine what to improve or develop further. In this process, we collect so-called aggregated data, which shows how many people clicked a link, but nothing more specific than that.
However, in some cases it is possible that this data could indirectly identify you, for instance if you use a unique device or visit us from a specific IP address. In such cases, we take all possible measures to ensure your information remains practically anonymous through technical and organisational safeguards and agreements with our providers.
Sometimes, we want to be able to track a visitor to see where they come from so that we can learn where we should focus our presence. We may also want to advertise new services to previous visitors, in which case we will ask for your consent to use marketing cookies.
To improve your user experience and ensure our website remains secure, we ask for your consent to use functional cookies.
Even necessary cookies may sometimes be able to identify you as the user of a specific device, for example if you have made a language choice or requested certain content to be displayed.
Cookies can include the following information, which, by itself or combined with other data, could identify you:
- Search history
- Ads or links you clicked
- Google membership and last login
- Facebook membership
- Language preferences
- Cookie preferences
- Browser details
- IP address
- Click pattern
- Date and time visit
- Type of hardware/software
We always strive to minimise the risk of identifying you through cookies unless it is necessary for a specific function or a purpose you have consented to. Read more about how we process personal data.
For more information on our use of cookies, kindly contact us via email at dataskydd@royalcourt.se.
You can also read more about cookies on the Post- och telestyrelsen (“PTS”) website. PTS is the Swedish authority responsible for supervision of cookies and similar technologies.
