Exhibition: Hans Hammarskiöld 100 years

The photographer Hans Hammarskiöld worked professionally for over fifty years and was one of Swedish photography’s most important names in the second half of the twentieth century.

At Gripsholm Castle, we are now showing some of Hans Hammarskiöld’s portraits of the royal family and cultural figures, photographed between 1950 and 2011. His portraits bring forth a sense of the individual, who is often portrayed with sensitive humour and touch of light-heartedness. Hammarskiöld preferred to depict his models in their natural environment – at home, at work, in nature. He liked to use daylight, whenever possible, with the contrasts between light and dark creating drama and setting the mood.

Some of these photographs are portraits from Hans Hammarskiöld’s extensive donation to Nationalmuseum in 2008, others are portraits acquired through the gift fund of Gripsholmsföreningen (the Gripsholm Association). The exhibition is produced by Nationalmuseum.
