The Romeo and Juliet Choir at Gripsholm

Don't miss a colourful experience when the Romeo and Juliet Choir performs at Gripsholm Castle with the Renaissance concert Mascherata.

Taking inspiration from the Renaissance festivals and carnivals of northern Italy, the Romeo and Juliet Choir performs a toe-tapping concert of rich, beautiful music by one of the Renaissance's greatest hit-makers, Bartolomeo Tromboncino (1470–1532).

Mascherata treats audiences to a lively, vibrant evening of masquerade in Renaissance Italy, lifting them out of time and space in a celebration of music, art, playfulness and life. The Renaissance is here and now.

Tromboncino's music was sung and played in streets and squares, and was danced along to during masquerades, parties and carnivals. He was much sought after in the courts of northern Italy, and his patrons Lucrezia Borgia and Isabella d'Este vied to include him among their musicians. He live during violent, turbulent times. Europe was being torn apart by religious wars, and its people were plagued by oppression and epidemics. However, culture also took its natural place – art flourished, bringing comfort and joy amid the darkness.
