FANNY HELLGREN

Born 1992

"The series of images ‘Sediment Drawings’ can be viewed as painterly documentations of geological processes. The works relate to the poet William Blake’s 1803 phrase ‘To see a World in a Grain of Sand’ – a worldview that describes how the origins of the Earth are contained in the tiniest component parts of matter.

The images are created using a process that I developed myself, in which the relationship between chance and control is central. I pour sand and water onto wet watercolour paper. I then shake out landscapes on the paper, before covering them with paint using a paint sprayer. The paint travels with the water beneath the sand dunes, ‘sketching’ them out. The next day, once the sand is completely dry, I brush it off. What remains is pigmented traces of the landscapes on the paper, which are so detailed that the outline of each grain of sand is visible. These images illustrate what happens in geological processes when landscapes are formed and become depicted processes of materiality, of time, and of the cosmic origins of the earth."

THE SELECTION COMMITTEE'S MOTIVATION:
Fanny Hellgren has developed her own design process in the interaction between control and chance. Sand, water and paint depict far-away landscapes on the watercolour paper. The process of wet sand distributing paint pigments, and dry sand disappearing and leaving empty spaces, brings to mind geological processes and the emergence of real landscapes.
