SCHOLARSHIP WINNER 2025

ISAK SMEDFORS HELDT

Born 1999

"Monk and Pig is an artist’s book project that explores and challenges how a comic book shapes the visual narrative of a story. The book is primarily a collection of reduction linocut prints. This method involves printing multiple colours from the same piece of linoleum. You gradually cut away the linoleum where you want to keep the colour from previous layers, before printing the next colour on top. I start by drawing on the linoleum with a marker pen. I then work from the drawing, like a map, throughout the printing process.

Two months later, all that remains to be printed are the market pen lines in black print colour. Finally, the image is tied together by strengthening the contrast between colours, figures and backgrounds. In drawing, there’s a unique visual space between idea and reality. A language that everyone can read, but that everyone understands differently. It’s my compass for all kinds of problem-solving. That’s why I always carry a sketchbook in my back pocket, in case I get lost."

THE SELECTION COMMITTEE'S MOTIVATION:
Isak Smedfors Heldt creates his own world filled with tension and rage which, with an imagery closely related to film, shatters the limitations of the image surface. With constantly challenging camera angles and a furious colour palette, we encounter brutal events that are coloured with a stylish sense of rhythm and balance.
