JOSEFIN SELANDER

Born 1990

"I draw in my sketchbook when I’m outdoors or when I’m travelling – never in my studio. When I move outwards, I find the energy needed to go down into the pen and into the paper. I become grounded and a participant observer of what is happening all around me. My surroundings flow in and out of my body, and here I find a state where a drawing can begin to take shape. I often draw both figuratively and abstractly, and by disconnecting my intellect, my inner unconscious begins to collaborate with my surroundings.

My drawings are small, and are almost like diary entries. When I’ve filled an entire sketchbook, I take it apart and I can start to see how the drawings relate to each other outside the framework of the sketchbook. During the past year, I’ve been drawn to water and how I can draw it in various ways. I draw directly with felt-tip pens on the paper, and every line becomes permanent. I find pleasure in choosing the colour, drawing different strokes next to each other and seeing the colour values build up."

THE SELECTION COMMITTEE'S MOTIVATION:
Josefin Selander draws her gaze with irrevocable felt-tip pen and a sense of directness. Before the thought, flattened grass and pine light have ended up on the paper.
