NILS EKMAN

Born 1990

"My drawings are careful studies of mental objects – meticulous illustrations of shifting ideas – in which lines and colour fields are combined to create compositions that aim to reflect the fluid logic of my inner world of images. The sharp and the precise become the schematic and the vague, like the way a thought moves across the imagined. Insinuations and indications combine with beginnings and interruptions in a way that leaves the image in a state of an ‘almost something’ – a nascent thought that is released inside the viewer’s head."

Master’s degree in fine art, 2018, Malmö Art Academy

THE SELECTION COMMITTEE'S MOTIVATION:
Nils Ekman shows us that drawing and colour can be used to create something lighter than air, and that with just a few careful strokes and shades of colour he can create a clear space in which something intangible is performed by something intangible. The lack of titles is appropriate, as any addition would destroy the openness promised by the drawings.
