LEON GRÜNBERGER

Born 2000

"In my artistic process, it’s important to always be sensitive and open. To be constantly attentive and receptive to new compositions, patterns, perspectives, and encounters with flora and fauna, which become part of my works. My surroundings thereby function as an active archive in my artistry and my visual language. Using a mobile phone camera and a sketchbook, I collect motifs, fragments and ideas that are later reshaped and combined – a bit like a jigsaw puzzle. This process then meets the hand and the material, where – in the actual making – I try to be aware of allowing all the parts to find their place.

Drawing is always the starting point for my work. Whether I’m painting, designing, sketching out ideas or working on an actual drawing, the first step is always taken with pen and paper in hand. Through drawing, I explore form, movement and relationships, and it’s here that decisions are made. For me, drawing is a way of thinking, and a way of understanding. I use it for everything. I have always done so, and will continue to do so for the rest of my life."

THE SELECTION COMMITTEE'S MOTIVATION:
An act of drawing that demands compositional sensitivity and an accurate, trained hand. Leon Grünberger’s collected fragments are made expressive through the rhythmic distribution of blackness. Sooty alterations and scrawled overlays become scenes and landscapes that have never been seen before, new to the world.
