King Karl XIV Johan
1763-1844

Karl XIV Johan dressed in his general's uniform with the Swedish sash of the Order of the Seraphim. The portrait was painted by the French artist François Gérard. The painting reflects his intense gaze and clear presence. The crown prince is portrayed at the height of his military career.

François Gérard was the leading portrait painter of his time, and made his breakthrough in the Paris salons as a young man. He received honours including the Legion of Honour for his work.
